(NaturalNews) Cinnamon is a simple flavoring, but it is the most pungent, popular, and common of all the spices. It has some surprisingly potential health benefits and is one of the world's most important medicinal spices. Cinnamon was used as medicine by medieval physicians to treat coughing, hoarseness, sore throats, colds, and flu, as well as problems with the digestive system. In addition to medicinal use, cinnamon was used as a preservative because it has phenols which inhibit bacterial growth; thus, it was used to preserve meats.

Studies have indicated that cinnamon has antifungal, antibacterial, and antiparasitic qualities. It has been found effective in fighting vaginal and oral yeast infections, stomach ulcers, and head lice. Cinnamon has anti-inflammatory properties which aid in decreasing body inflammation that is caused by our Western diet of fried, fatty, and processed foods.

In recent studies, cinnamon may actually help people with Type 2 diabetes by controlling blood sugar levels, while possibly lowering bad cholesterol and triglycerides. In a study in Pakistan, people with Type 2 diabetes were given a gram of cinnamon a day for forty days. The results showed a significant decrease in blood sugar levels, LDL (bad) cholesterol, total cholesterol and triglycerides.
Historically, cinnamon and cinnamon oil are mentioned 130 times in the Bible. In fact, they are mentioned in Exodus 30: 22-25 where Moses used these ingredients for his anointing oil. They were burned at funerals, and the Egyptians used them in their embalming process.

Cinnamon is a native of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and dates back to 2800 B.C. where it was found in Chinese writings. Early cinnamon came from the bark of the laurel tree. Modern day cinnamon comes from the cassia tree. Cinnamon was once so highly-prized that wars were fought over it; it was used as a currency and for aphrodisiacal powers. Cinnamon, once grown only in Sri Lanka, is now grown in Java, Sumatra, Borneo, Mauritius, Reunion and Guyana, in addition to America, the West Indies, Vietnam, China, Indonesia and other tropical-climate countries.

In the late 17th century cinnamon was so popular that the Dutch, French, English and Portuguese fought for control of the island of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) to gain the monopoly of the cinnamon crop. Today, cinnamon is still in demand all over the world; there is an abundant supply of it and it is affordable for most people.

Cinnamon not only smells good and tastes good but is also good for you. If you want something different to spread on your toast at breakfast, mix a teaspoon of cinnamon into a cup of honey and spread this on your toast for a delicious treat. Furthermore, add a tablespoon of cinnamon to the raw apples when making applesauce. This will help to preserve the applesauce in the refrigerator for weeks.

(NaturalNews) Grapefruits are a popular citrus fruit enjoyed by millions of people and are often eaten regularly as a breakfast staple as well as a popular snack. What many may not be aware of is that grapefruits are also one of the most highly regarded fruits when it comes to healthy nutrients and health benefits. Grapefruits contains powerful antioxidants and valuable nutrients, such as Vitamins C, A, K, D, and B complex. Other important nutrients contained in grapefruits are potassium, folic acid, calcium, phytonutrients and phosphorus.

Consuming grapefruits on a regular basis boosts the immune system and helps prevent colds. Additionally, grapefruit juice is effective in healing sore throats, eliminating coughs, and reducing fevers. Grapefruits are also instrumental in increasing the body's alkalinity and reducing acidity, and in preventing or treating various diseases.

Grapefruits additional benefits include:

*Promoting proper functioning of the digestive system. The fibers in the fruit aid in preventing constipation.
*Controlling blood pressure.
*Lowering cholesterol.
*Helps to control blood sugar levels. Grapefruits are an excellent addition to a diet for diabetics.
*Alleviates fatigue. Those needing a quick pick-me-up will find that a glass of grapefruit and lemon juice, mixed in equal parts, will dispel general fatigue.
*Relieves insomnia. People suffering from this condition should drink one glass of grapefruit juice before going to sleep.
*Daily consumption of grapefruits seems to relieve inflammation caused by inflammatory disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus.
*And, last but not least, grapefruits contain fat burning enzymes that are instrumental in promoting weight loss.

Grapefruits can be classified as one of "nature's medicines" as they are instrumental in addressing various diseases. One important attribute is that grapefruits have anti-cancer properties which can help prevent and help treat certain types of cancer. A recent study conducted at UCLA and Zhongshan University in China concluded that a beneficial plant compound found in grapefruit, Naringenin, helped repair DNA in human prostate cancer cells.

It should be noted, however, that grapefruits do interact with certain medications which may cause potentially dangerous side effects. This is due to the fact that they interfere in the absorption of certain medications. Therefore, if taking medications, consult a qualified health professional before consuming grapefruits or grapefruit extracts.

On a final note, grapefruits can also be beneficial to the environment, itself. Little known facts are that grapefruit hulls can be used to condition soil. Old grapefruit trees can be salvaged for firewood, and, lastly, grapefruit hulls and dried grapefruit can be used to feed cattle when combined with dried pulp.

(NaturalNews) Two related herbs, paw paw and graviola, have proven effective against cancer cells in vitro (lab tests not involving mammals) while not adversely affecting non-cancer cells. In other words, they are potential non-toxic cancer cures. Even Sloane-Ketterer established that graviola has cancer cell resisting properties and doesn't damage healthy cells. However, private research proves that paw paw is even more potent than graviola for curing cancer.

Why Aren't These Herbs Known to the General Public?

It costs too much for continued animal and human trials. However, the last section of this article features a limited trial. The way the approval system works has been rigged. Only large pharmaceutical companies can afford the trials they need to get FDA approval and exclusive patent rights that will bring huge profits while the patent is in effect. Big Pharma can't patent purely natural extracts from plants. So it's not worthy of their funding.

Nevertheless, over the last 20 years of the 20th century, a lot of research had been conducted at Purdue University by Professor of Pharmacology Jerry McLaughlin, PhD on paw paw, what it can do, and what makes it tick. He was fortunate to receive enough institutional and private funding for his work, and several alternative health practitioners as well as adventurous MDs and individuals picked up the ball, using paw paw extract products for cancer and other health issues, even Lyme Disease.

All About Paw Paw

Before completely retiring in 2004 as a private researcher, Professor McLaughlin's published papers from Purdue featured only one of the eight species of paw paw, the Asimina triloba species. This species had the highest concentration of substances known as acetogenins than any species of paw paw or graviola.

Acetogenins inhibit a process known as adenosine tryphosphate, or ATP. This is a metabolic process that takes place in a cell's mitochondria, those strands in the interior of each cell. Cancer cells are high ATP users, thus inhibiting ATP will create a situation of the cancer cells dying off or apoptosis (programmed cell death).

Chemo kills cancer cells faster than paw paw causes apoptosis. But of course, chemo kills healthy cells too, creating more suffering and even killing the cancer patient. Acetogenins do not harm non-cancerous cells. So paw paw and graviola are non-toxic cures. Although graviola has been tagged as "Brazilian paw paw", its products are considered inferior to paw paw for two reasons:

(1)Paw paw products that use McLaughlin's formula contain more acetogenins than graviola. And McLaughlin's technique involves harvesting the twigs at the right time to create standardized dosages in those paw paw products.

(2)Even more importantly, the acetogenin chemical structures in paw paw are much stronger. Those structures are double rings compared to single rings that are prevalent in graviola.

Is Any Third Party Human Trial of Record?

The state of Nevada allows a physician or health practitioner to perform informal clinical trials with unapproved remedies on terminal cancer patients who have already tried the Medical Mafia's routine of cut, burn, or poison.

In Reno, Nevada, James W. Forsythe, MD, associated with McLaughlin in 2002 and 2003 to test paw paw on cancer patients that fit those Nevada state law guidelines. Considering the condition of stage IV cancer patients who have been treated by mainstream medicine, the fact that 13 of the first 20 tried beat their cancer with paw paw is impressive.

Further testing has produced great results with no side effects. Additionally, other health issues were handled with the cancer patients using paw paw as well. There are even reports of success with Lyme Disease using standardized paw paw.

(NaturalNews) Pistachios had been linked in previous studies to lowering bad cholesterol, and a new study reported by Science Daily says they also increase antioxidant levels in the bloodstream. Antioxidants are molecules that prevent oxidation damage to other molecules.

Oxidation damage may be a source of serious illness and disease. Low levels of antioxidants in the blood may cause what is called "oxidative stress." Oxidative stress can lead to the dying off of good cells needed to function. It is still unclear in science whether antioxidant levels are associated with degenerative diseases. Penny Kris-Etherton, a Penn State professor of nutrition and head of the new pistachio study, doesn't believe science yet understands antioxidants. "The antioxidant story is very disappointing to the scientific community," said Kris-Etherton in the Science Daily pistachio report.

Pistachios are high in lutein, beta carotene, and Vitamin E. All three of these important vitamins are oil soluble. Oil soluble vitamins are important to health because they are stored in tissues longer and released at a slower rate than water soluble vitamins. Pistachios are also excellent sources of bone building copper, manganese, and phosphorous along with heart healthy potassium and magnesium. Pistachios are the only nut to contain the two carotenoids, lutein and zeaxanthin.

In this new study, researchers gave 2 groups with the same base diet, differing amounts of pistachios. One group received 1.5 ounces of pistachios daily while the other received 3 ounces each day. Both groups had increased lutein, beta carotene, and Vitamin E with all participants decreasing their bad cholesterol levels after the study.

Another heart healthy benefit to these smiling nuts, as they are commonly referred to as, is the presence of the amino acid, arginine. Arginine benefits people who suffer from angina and those who have undergone serious trauma. Arginine is an important factor in cell division, removing ammonia from the body, releasing hormones, and helping maintain a healthy immune system.

A one ounce serving of pistachios has 160 calories. Pistachios have proven to be an excellent source of vitamin B6, fiber, thiamin, and phosphorus. Eating nuts in general is associated with a lower body mass index, and no weight gain was measured by adding the daily intake of pistachios during the study.

Choosing pistachios wisely is the key to obtaining the maximum health benefits. Pistachios are often roasted and heavily salted, making those varieties a danger for those watching sodium levels. Finding a source of unsalted, raw pistachios, could be a great long term asset to one's health plan.

Adding healthy pistachios to your diet is easy. They are a tasty snack by themselves or you can add them to salads, smoothies, or desserts. Organic pistachio nut butter offers the ease of being creative while adding antioxidants to your diet.

(NaturalNews) Researchers from Indiana University (IU) in Bloomington recently conducted a study on the effects of praying directly with someone for healing. According to Candy Gunther Brown, an associate professor in the Department of Religious Studies at IU and author of the study, "proximal intercessory prayer", as she calls it, can actually help to bring about healing.

Published in the Southern Medical Journal, the study is part of a larger research project investigating the power of spiritual healing practices to heal disease. For this particular study, Brown and her team investigated two charismatic Christian groups known for their healing prayer activities, one from Africa and one from South America.

The team measured the hearing and vision capabilities of impaired people both before and after they received proximal intercessory prayer, and discovered a "statistically significant" improvement in many of them after they had received prayer.

Two people with impaired hearing reduced the threshold at which they were able to detect sound by 50 decibels. Three people with vision impairment at 20/400 or worse improved to 20/80 or better after receiving prayer. One woman who was virtually blind before receiving prayer was able to not only see a person's hand afterward, but was able to count the person's fingers and read the 20/125 line on a vision chart.

Brown explained that Christian subgroups that practice proximal intercessory prayer are among the fastest growing groups worldwide because of this phenomenon.

"If [people] feel that a particular religious or spiritual practice healed them, they are much more likely to become an adherent. This phenomenon, more than any other, accounts for the growth of these Christian subgroups globally," she explained.

(NaturalNews) As if walnuts weren't already a powerhouse of health benefits, we learn of another significant benefit from a recent study conducted by the Yale-Griffin Prevention Research Center. Published in the February issue of Diabetes Care, the study concluded that eating 2 ounces of walnuts, about 16 to 22 halves, every day as part of a normal diet may improve cardiovascular health in people with Type 2 diabetes.

Previous studies have demonstrated that walnuts promote heart health in healthy adults, but few of those studies have focused on diabetes.

"The research team found that endothelial function improved significantly when people consumed the walnut-enriched diet for 8 weeks, compared to when they followed their normal diets. We were very gratified by these findings," said Dr. David Katz, Yale University School of Medicine and principal investigator. "We all know the adage about 'an apple a day,' but in fact there are other foods that people should consider adding to their daily diets for specific health benefit. Walnuts rank high on that list."

Dr Katz goes on to say, "There are tens of millions of diabetics in the U.S. right now, and unfortunately, that number will rise rather steeply for the foreseeable future. Identifying simple, accessible, and even enjoyable lifestyle practices that can mitigate the potential harms of diabetes is of clear public health importance."

In another study published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, 55 participants with type 2 diabetes were put on low fat diets. The only group to achieve a cardioprotective fat profile was the one that ate walnuts every day.

Additional research has confirmed that when walnuts are eaten as part of a low-fat diet, the results show more heart protection for diabetic patients than can be achieved by simply lowering the fat content of the diet.

Weight gain and diabetes are a dangerous equation, so the extra 350 calories from two ounces of walnuts every day could have been problematic for the Yale study participants. However due to daily diet counseling and guidance the group did not gain weight, indicating that even for people for whom weight gain is a risk to their health, walnuts can be a part of a healthy diet.

Deanna Dean

(NaturalNews) Black raspberries have taken center stage in the last decade as a cure or deceleration of one of the deadliest and sixth most common cancers - oral cancer. Research in the last seven years reveals the remarkable effects of black raspberries. They surpass strawberries and blueberries by possessing chemical and antioxidant qualities as anti-tumor agents. They contain ellagic acid, a polyphenol with strong antioxidant activity. In addition, drying the berries into a powder concentrates the ellagic acid and, when used as five-ten percent of the diet, this powder restricts the initiation and progression of oral cancer.

Oral cancer refers to malignancies of the oral and nasal cavities, tongue, throat, and larynx. The malignancy or its treatment often affects the neck and face, not only altering the facial appearance, but also interfering with such vital functions as breathing, speech, and swallowing. Oral cancer in the U.S. strikes men 50-75 years of age who have a history of chronic acid reflux, tobacco and alcohol use. Presently, it is also increasingly occurring in women. Rats injected with cancer-causing agents and then fed a berry-rich diet had 80 percent fewer malignant tumors compared to rats on a berry-free diet. In 2002, a hamster model of oral cancer disclosed that dietary black raspberries could suppress tumor development in the oral cavity.

Moreover, if research continues to be as positive as it is currently, the black raspberry could play a major role in the eradication of not only oral cancer, but colon and skin cancer as well. Berries, in addition to a healthful regimen of colorful fruits, vegetables, and nuts, such as cranberries, red peppers, sweet potatoes, pumpkins, nectarines, avocados, spinach, red grapes, almonds, and pecans, are the latest approach to the cancer fight. This intensified treatment program of natural compounds is being universally recognized to reduce the cancer risk. Dr. Gary Stoner, lead researcher at Ohio State University, advocates this regimen.

Pioneering discoveries have occurred in the cultivation of black raspberries at the Hollings Cancer center Medical University of South Carolina, the University of Minnesota, and the University of Kentucky. However, the most extensive, complete and major accomplishments continue to occur at the Ohio State University. Progress is slow, but the series of laboratory and animal studies will help the progress toward the suppression of oral cancer development.
